A conference, regardless of its nature, is one of those business meetings where you need to present yourself impeccably. Of course an ironed shirt or a perfectly tailored dress or suit is an absolute must. What rules should you also remember when choosing an outfit for a conference? Which wardrobe items should be avoided?

What is the nature of the event?

The first issue to consider when choosing attire for a conference is the nature of the event. Conferences are divided into business and academic, and each of them more or less requires a different degree of formality in dress, which also depends on the role you take at it.

It is worth noting that organizers of such events increasingly include a note about the suggested dress code right on the invitation. However, if such information is not provided, nothing is lost. Answering a few essential questions can help you choose the appropriate outfit:

  • What type of conference is it?
  • Where will the conference take place? Will it be conference rooms – Małopolska? Or is the event held in a large city, e.g. Warsaw?
  • What is your role: a speaker or an attendee?
  • What is your status: do you hold an academic title, are you appearing at the conference as a company CEO, or as a representative of the company you work for?
  • Is the conference room air-conditioned?

Conference attire – basic rules

Regardless of whether the conference will last just a few hours or a full day, the attire must be comfortable enough not to restrict movement in any way. This will help you feel at ease. Besides comfortable clothing, you should also ensure it is clean and ironed – only then will you present yourself professionally.

Business formal attire

The business formal style can be described as an office uniform. It is the most classic form of business attire, based on safe colors such as white, black, navy, charcoal, or brown. Of course, garments in this color palette should be of very good quality, properly fitted to the body, and immaculate in appearance. It should also be emphasized that dark-colored attire is reserved for evening meetings, so if the conference lasts all day, it's worth choosing clothing in shades of gray or navy.

Business formal for men

The foundation of a business-style outfit for men is a good-quality, well-tailored suit in black, navy, or brown. This set is completed by a long-sleeved shirt, a tie, classic lace-up shoes, and socks in a shade close to the suit color.

Business formal for women

Women have considerably more options for creating business outfits. Of course, the preferred color palette is the same as for men's suits, but women may opt for a dress, a blazer with a skirt or trousers, a women's suit, or an elegant blouse with trousers or a skirt.

For events like conferences, women should avoid patterned or heavily embellished clothing. Opt for minimalism, which also applies to jewelry and shoes. It is important to choose footwear that covers the toes and heels, with heels no higher than 5 cm.

Business casual style

The business casual style allows much more freedom. Men can afford to loosen their tie, and women can choose lighter-colored clothing. Although this style is increasingly appearing in conference rooms, it is much better suited to business events than academic ones.

What should be avoided?

Now that you know what works in a conference outfit, it's worth knowing what to avoid at all costs. First on the list is jeans, which absolutely do not fit the conference etiquette. Also included on the banned list are sandals, short shorts, tank tops, as well as clothing with large prints, logos, or garments made of shiny or see-through fabrics.

Choosing the right outfit for a conference is not a difficult task. It is enough to opt primarily for minimalism, simplicity, and safe colors. By sticking to these rules, you can create a successful outfit in which everyone, regardless of gender, will look neat and professional.
